mystic ken Wins Picks Club 1A Title

Just one season after winning the 1AA championship, mystic ken becomes the second player in Picks Club history to win back-to-back season titles. Damose won two straight 1A championships in 2006-07. To win the title, mystic ken had to overcome some pretty strong competition from Hoovile and SECFball.

Before the BCS championship game between Texas and Alabama, SECFball had a 3-point lead over both Hooville and mystic ken. All three players picked Alabama to win the game, so if Texas had won, SECFball would have won his first 1A championship. Hooville and mystic ken both assigned 5 points to the final game, while SECFball assigned one point to it. So after the game, SECFball fell one point behind, and Hooville and mystic ken tied for first place.

The championship had to be decided by the score picks, which were very close. Hooville had picked Alabama to win, 24-20 (-14 points), while mystic ken picked 27-23 (-12 points), which meant mystic ken's pick was only two points closer than Hooville's.

During the game, Alabama scored two late touchdowns off of Texas' turnovers, which were obviously very costly to the Longhorns. But they also prevented Hooville from winning his second 1A title. If the final score had been 24-21, Hooville's score pick would have only been one point off, and mystic ken's would have been 5 points off. But, congratulations to mystic ken on a great playoff and on winning the championship. Thanks to everyone for making this another memorable year in the Picks Club.

YCougars Wins 1AA Title

Picks Club Hall of Famer YCougars won his first 1AA playoff today, by correctly picking 9 of the last 14 bowl games. This year's bowl season was more difficult than usual, so there were a lot of players with sub-par records. In round 2, YCougars barely made the cut, with a 10-10 record, but it was just enough to get him into the third round. Congratulations to YCougars. Nice work on your bowl picks!

Hooville Wins Picks Club Record 5th Division Title

With Hooville's narrow victory over Damose, he becomes the first Picks Club player to win 5 division championships (2000, 01, 02, 04, 09). Cougar in Big D and White Lightning are now the only players who have 4 division titles, and Blue Coug, DaCougs, and Bama are the only players to win 3. This year, SECFball won his second division title, and he joins BlueK, D Talbot, Rich Strong, and SportsFan, as the only players with 2 titles.

Hooville, MWCFAN, SECFball and DaCougs Win 2009 Division Championships

Congratulations to our four division champions for 2009: Hooville, MWCFAN, SECFball, and DaCougs. Hooville was in second place after week 11, but after going 11-4 in his final week and after worst weeks were dropped, he moved into a tie first place with Damose. He won the division championship because his score picks were 4 points closer than Damose. MWCFAN had an incredible year, leading from start to finish. The Picks Club will need to look into historical records to see how often this has happened before, but I can only remember one other time when Sports Fan did it. MWCFAN is most likely the only rookie to have ever done that. SECFball was in an epic battle with southernswami and Cougar in Big D for the South division championship. Cougar in Big D made too many risky picks and finished in 3rd place, but southernswami and SECFball ended up tied for the best record. SECFball was 8 points closer on the 4 pick the score games, so he claimed the championship. DaCougs and stripes were neck and neck most of the season, but DaCougs ended up winning the division by just one game.

Here's the breakdown on the four pick the score games (Florida International at Florida, Oklahoma at Texas Tech, Purdue at Indiana and San Diego St at Utah). Here's how Hooville, Damose, SECFball, and southernswami did in each of the four games.

  FIU/FL OU/TxTech Pur/IN SDSU/UT
  3-62 13-41 38-21 7-38
Hooville (-82) 6-52 (-13) 31-16 (-43) 28-27 (-16) 16-37 (-10)
Damose (-86) 7-42 (-21) 38-17 (-49) 35-27 (-9) 14-38 (-7)
SECFball (-85) 6-49 (-16) 34-21 (-41) 27-24 (-14) 17-34 (-14)
southernswami (-93) 10-42 (-27) 38-31 (-35) 27-24 (-14) 20-34 (-17)

Wild Card Qualifiers

Congratulations also to our six wild card qualifiers: Damose, mystic ken, White Lightning, southernswami, stripes, and AY. The six of you plus the four division champions will play in the 1A playoffs which start in December during the bowl season. You've all earned a few weeks off. Congratulations on a very good year of picks!

Seven Pickmeisters in Week 12

This week's Pickmeisters were: AY (1), Blue Coug (8), byubob (6), Conundrum (6), DaCougs (9), Spartacus (3), and stripes (7). All of them were 13-2 in the final week of the regular season. Congratulations!

Hall of Fame Update

Congratulations to the Hall of Fame Class of 2009! These players include byubob, who qualified for the Hall by winning the 1A championship at the end of last season. Also, after looking through our records dating back to 1987, it appears we neglected to induct a very deserving player, D Talbot, into the Hall of Fame. He met the requirements for the Hall way back in 1987 when he won his second division championship. But he'll be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Our apologies to Mr. Talbot for this oversight, and we're pleased to finally correct this error.

2009 March Madness Champion - tincanclub!

Congratulations to tincanclub, who won the 2009 March Madness championship. It's really old news by now, but it has been a busy Spring so far here at the Picks Club. This is his first March Madness championship, and he becomes the 10th champion in the 11th season of the March Madness picks. BlueCoug is the only player to win more than one time (2005 and 2000). Congratulations to tincanclub!
