News ArchiveHooville Wins Picks Club Record 5th Division TitleWith Hooville's narrow victory over Damose, he becomes the first Picks Club player to win 5 division championships (2000, 01, 02, 04, 09). Cougar in Big D and White Lightning are now the only players who have 4 division titles, and Blue Coug, DaCougs, and Bama are the only players to win 3. This year, SECFball won his second division title, and he joins BlueK, D Talbot, Rich Strong, and SportsFan, as the only players with 2 titles. Hooville, MWCFAN, SECFball and DaCougs Win 2009 Division ChampionshipsCongratulations to our four division champions for 2009: Hooville, MWCFAN, SECFball, and DaCougs. Hooville was in second place after week 11, but after going 11-4 in his final week and after worst weeks were dropped, he moved into a tie first place with Damose. He won the division championship because his score picks were 4 points closer than Damose. MWCFAN had an incredible year, leading from start to finish. The Picks Club will need to look into historical records to see how often this has happened before, but I can only remember one other time when Sports Fan did it. MWCFAN is most likely the only rookie to have ever done that. SECFball was in an epic battle with southernswami and Cougar in Big D for the South division championship. Cougar in Big D made too many risky picks and finished in 3rd place, but southernswami and SECFball ended up tied for the best record. SECFball was 8 points closer on the 4 pick the score games, so he claimed the championship. DaCougs and stripes were neck and neck most of the season, but DaCougs ended up winning the division by just one game. Here's the breakdown on the four pick the score games (Florida International at Florida, Oklahoma at Texas Tech, Purdue at Indiana and San Diego St at Utah). Here's how Hooville, Damose, SECFball, and southernswami did in each of the four games.
Wild Card QualifiersCongratulations also to our six wild card qualifiers: Damose, mystic ken, White Lightning, southernswami, stripes, and AY. The six of you plus the four division champions will play in the 1A playoffs which start in December during the bowl season. You've all earned a few weeks off. Congratulations on a very good year of picks! Seven Pickmeisters in Week 12This week's Pickmeisters were: AY (1), Blue Coug (8), byubob (6), Conundrum (6), DaCougs (9), Spartacus (3), and stripes (7). All of them were 13-2 in the final week of the regular season. Congratulations!
Hall of Fame UpdateCongratulations to the Hall of Fame Class of 2009! These players include byubob, who qualified for the Hall by winning the 1A championship at the end of last season. Also, after looking through our records dating back to 1987, it appears we neglected to induct a very deserving player, D Talbot, into the Hall of Fame. He met the requirements for the Hall way back in 1987 when he won his second division championship. But he'll be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Our apologies to Mr. Talbot for this oversight, and we're pleased to finally correct this error. |

Congratulations to the following players, who qualified for the Hall of Fame in 2006:
Sports Fan - qualified when he won his 2nd Division championship
Damose - qualified by winning the 1A championship at the end of the 2006 season

Florida won easily today over Ohio St, and only three players had picked them to repeat as champions. Absolute Empire was one of them. His performance in this year's March Madness picks actually set a new Picks Club record for points - 153. The old record was 130 points, set by DaCougs, who happened to take second this year. One of the best things about this year's picks is that most players did just as well as the "guest experts." Congratulations to Absolute Empire, in his first year of making picks. Hopefully, he'll return next year to defend his title.

Though Ohio State ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown, it was all Florida after that, as the Gators went on to outscore the Buckeyes, 41-7 in the rest of the game. The Buckeye offense managed to gain fewer than 100 yards of total offense.
Though the game was never really in question after the 1st quarter, the Picks Club championship had already been decided the night before when S Mississippi beat Ohio. Damose was 7.5 points ahead of EZone00, who was in second place, but there were only 5 points left to earn. Jockanddoc was the only 1A player to correctly pick Florida to win the game, but he ultimately lost by 3 total points. It seems the biggest difference in determining this year's winner was in Rounds 3 and 4 when Damose was 12-2 and earned 33.5 points, while jockanddoc was 9-5 and earned 25.5 points. Damose has been a very good Picks Club player over the past few years, but this is his first time as champion. With the championship win, now he can also add "Hall of Fame" to his resume.
Moose Wins 1AA Championship
With only one game left to play, YCougars, Moose and SECFball were tied for first place, with records of 14-5. Hooville was a close second, with a record of 13-6. YCougars and SECFball both picked Ohio St to win, but Hooville and Moose both picked Florida. If Moose had picked Ohio St, we would have seen a 4-way tie for first place, and it would have come down to the score predictions to determine the champion. But, Moose picked Florida and took home the prize. Moose has now won a division championship as well as a 1AA championship.

August 5 , 2006 -
Blue Bozo, DaCougs, and White Lightning have earned their way into the Picks Club Hall of Fame. Blue Bozo won his 10th Weekly Pickmeister Award on October 15, 2005, by going 11-4. The week before, he won his 9th Weekly Award. DaCougs only needed 18 regular season wins to qualify for the Hall of Fame. Going into the 2005 season, he had already won two division titles (2004 and 2002), and he had 467 regular season wins. White Lightning made the Hall of Fame by perhaps the smallest margin in the history of the Picks Club. All he needed was a second division title, which he earned in 2005, but just barely. In the final week of the season, he had two more wins than torison56 to tie for first place in the division. In the tie-breaker, his scores in the four games were just 21 points closer than torison56's predictions (that's only about 5 points per game, by the way).

April 4, 2006 - When UCLA and Florida both advanced to the championship game, White Lightning was the only player to have both of them in his picks. He took a 13 point lead over horsecraazy, who also had UCLA in the championship game. Jonathan Trias was the only other player to have UCLA in the championship game, and nobody else (besides White Lightning) had Florida advancing that far.
With the win, White Lightning becomes the 8th different player to win a March Madness championship. The 13-point margin of victory was the highest in Picks Club history. His total of 101 points ties BlueK as the second-lowest point total by any champion, which really only means that the tournament results were pretty unexpected.
2006 - White Lightning - 101 points, horsecraazy - 88
2005 - Blue Coug - 119 points, Blue Bozo - 112
2004 - skogrun - 128 points, Hooville - 124
2003 - DallasJayhawk - 113 points, 92 Coog - 105
2002 - t2realtor - 121 points, razorb - 109
2001 - DaCougs - 130 points, Cougar in Big D - 122
2000 - Blue Coug - 91 points, won because his final score prediction was closer than cougdad's
1999 - BlueK - 101 points, won because his final score prediction was closer than DFW LSU Fan's

January 5 , 2006 - Although Weasel picked USC, he finished with enough points to earn his first ever 1A Picks Club Championship. He started the first round of the playoffs in 9th place (out of 10 players), and only had 11 of 20 possible points, but he finished the playoffs winning 18 and losing 9. Weasel beat out both of last year's defending champions, Blue Bozo and Bama. Congratulations to Weasel.
In the 1AA playoffs, Machokings also won his first ever championship in his rookie season, with an 11-4 record in the final round. Jeffacka and damose finished tied for second with records of 10-5. Machokings joins an elite group of Picks Club players who won championships in their rookie seasons. Congratulations!

July 24, 2005 - At the end of the 2004 football season, Blue Coug and Thundercoug both qualified for the Picks Club Hall of Fame. Blue Coug qualified when USC beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl, because it was his 75th career playoff win. Thundercoug is a Picks Club "old timer," having played in 1987 and 1988 before continuing his career in 2000 and 2004. He qualified for the Hall of Fame when Oregon St beat Notre Dame in the Insight Bowl.
This year's Hall of Fame induction ceremonies will be held on July 29. The Hall of Fame page will be updated then.

January 5, 2005 - In a 36-point game that wasn't even that close, USC crushed Oklahoma to win the Orange Bowl, and with that, the 2004 edition of the Picks Club comes to an end. Bama has won his first Picks Club championship, in only his second season, despite losing both the Sugar Bowl and the Orange Bowl.
He was far enough ahead of the rest of the 1A playoff contenders who had correctly picked USC to win the game. However, there were four other players who were only one game away from winning the championship instead of Bama. That could be the closest race in Picks Club history.
Earlier this season, Bama also won the South Division championship, and became only the second player in Picks Club history to win both a division and an overall championship. Congratulations!
In the 1AA playoffs, four players tied for first place, with records of 12-4 in the final round. To break the tie, the points off tie-breaker rule had to come into play. While all four of the tied players picked USC to win, none of them picked them to win in a blowout. The table below shows the points off breakdown. Be sure to read the tie-breaker rules on the playoff rules page.
| Actual | Blue Bozo | Blue Coug | tincanclub | White Lightning | |||||
| Oklahoma | 19 | 21 | (- 2) | 23 | (-4) | 28 | (-9) | 24 | (-5) |
| USC | 55 | 34 | (-21) | 27 | (-28) | 31 | (-24) | 28 | (-27) |
| Total | (-23) | (-32) | (-33) | (-32) | |||||
With only 23 total points off, Blue Bozo wins the tie-breaker and therefore, wins the 1AA championship. He also becomes the only player to win a 1A and a 1AA championship during his career. Congratulations!

July 22, 2004 - 92 Coog, compcoug, and Hooville have qualified for the Hall of Fame, and they were added to the Hall in last night's induction ceremonies. They were the first players inducted into the Picks Club Hall of Fame since 2000 when The Pickmeister was inducted. The Hall of Fame began in 1999 when Cougar in Big D, BlueK and Rich Strong were inducted.
92 Coog and Hooville both qualified for the Hall of Fame during the playoffs, and compcoug qualified at the end of the playoffs when he became the first player in the history of the Picks Club to win a second 1AA championship.

Last night, Connecticut beat Georgia Tech, 82-73 in a game that wasn't even that close, to win their second NCAA championship. With the win, skogrun becomes the 2004 Picks Club March Madness Office Pool champion, beating out Hooville by four points. Skogrun's 128 point total sets a new Picks Club record for points earned during the Office Pool contest, breaking Cougar in Big D's 2001 record of 122 points.
Hooville also set a new Picks Club record with 124 points for the runner-up. In fact, if Texas had beaten Xavier in the Sweet Sixteen, and no other changes took place, Hooville would have finished in 1st place with 129 points.

Congratulations to 92 Coog, the Picks Club 1A champion for the 2003 football season. He was able to win the championship because he correctly predicted LSU to beat Oklahoma. DaCougs was in first place, but he picked the Sooners. 92 Coog won 71% of the games in the playoffs (37-15).
1AA Playoffs: compcoug Holds Off Fierce Competition to Win Second 1AA Championship
With only one game left in the playoffs, compcoug, Moose, and MT in MD were all tied for first place with 9 wins each. It looked very likely that there would be a tie for the championship and that we'd have to use the tiebreaker rule to find the champion. However, compcoug correctly picked LSU to win the Sugar Bowl, and both Moose and MT in MD picked Oklahoma. Compcoug becomes the first Picks Club player in history to win the 1AA championship two times. Congratulations!
